Author Explores the Role of Masculinity in War

New York Times: A new book looks at the history of masculinity as defined by war from the Middle Ages to the present. From Chivalry to Terrorism: War, an Equal Opportunity Employer, a new book by Michael Sherry, takes a new approach to the study of the history of warfare. He analyzes the masculinity of war from antiquity to the Middle Ages when warriors were encased in armor through the Crusades to modern times where masculinity is "useful for rallying public opinion and raising armies, but far less so for men actually in battle."
