Vermont mayor injured in mock joust

The Mayor of Barre, Vermont, decided to have some fun at the town's Heritage Festival and joined in a "pedestal joust" using padded weapons. Unfortunately, His Honor took a tumble and broke several ribs.

According to local folklore, there was once a fistfight over the naming of the town of Barre. The pedestal jousting, done with padded weapons on an inflatable playing field akin to the "Moonwalk" ride at carnivals, is meant to be light-hearted fun re-enacting that fistfight. In this case, however, the Mayor took an unlucky fall and had be taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Publisher's note: This was a town festival, not an SCA-sanctioned event.
