Experts report that bone fragments have been carbon dated to the 1st or 2nd century C.E. Small remnants of purple linen decorated with sequins were also found. The tomb was not opened, but investigated by way of a small hole and a probe.

Remains discovered in 2006 beneath the Vatican have been declared to belong to St.Paul, according to Pope Benedict. The tomb bore the epigraph Paulo Apostolo Mart (Paul the Apostle and Martyr).
