3rd century skeletons surprise pond builders

Gardeners digging a pond near Mowmacre, England were surprised to find human remains beneath their shovels. The two skeletons have been dated to 3rd century Roman Britain, and were found along with bits of pottery.

Hilary Knowles, one of the pond builders, said, "My first reaction was disbelief and that I had watched one too many episodes of Taggart. All sorts of things go through your mind and we were worried we would make fools of ourselves by saying we had found human bones."

Experts believe the grave may have been part of a cemetery belonging to the community of the Roman fort at Ratae.
