Vindolanda Writing Tablets to return home

Thanks to a UKĀ£1.8m grant from regional development agency One North East, the Vindolanda Writing Tablets, the rich chronicle of Roman military in Britain, will be coming home to Vindolanda for "a rolling programme of displays" in 2012.

The tablets were discovered in the 1970s, and they include shopping lists and birthday invitations generated by residents of the Roman fort in northern Britain. "This funding will now ensure that future generations of visitors will be able to view these internationally important documents in the region where they were first written, giving them an enhanced insight into life during Roman times," said Stacy Hall, Director of Communications and Tourism at One North East.
