Airtight latrine preserves centuries-old broom

Archaeologists are excited about the discovery of a 300-year-old, perfectly-preserved broom in the excavated latrine of the St. Ulrich Church monastery in Paderborn, Germany. (photo)

“This is the oldest broom ever found in the region. Natural materials like leather and wood usually don’t survive the elements,” said city archaeologist Sven Spiong of the broom. While St. Ulrich Church dates to the 12th century, experts believe the broom would have been made in the 1700s.
