I'm Lost Creating A Persona

Hey. To say I'm wet behind the ears about this whole thing is an understatement to the extreme. I have an idea of what I'm doing from making personas for other types of places but nothing 'historic'. I guess I'm mainly looking for someone(s) who is willing to take my hand and guide me through the basics so I actually have something to stand on. All I know for sure is I'd like my persona to be English and I'm leaning towards having her be closer to 16th century. I am doing research so I'm not expecting someone to do everything for me but... please. Can anyone help me? At least point me in the right direction?

Justin already covered the

Justin already covered the resources pretty well. You seem to be mistaking nationality for culture. Culture very often crosses national borders - which is why they seem so similar to you. Celtic, Norse - those are cultures; Irish, Welsh, Norwegian - those are nationalities. Each nationality will put its own stamp on the dominant culture - hence Irish and Welsh Celts aren't exactly the same. My advice is to quit worrying about it so - just pick something you like for now. You don't have to commit to a persona so soon. Hang around your local group a bit and you may find that you want to have a persona from the same dominant culture they do (not every group will have a dominant culture and it's no obligation on anyone - it's just that people pick up on what others are doing) or that you want to do something completely different. In either case you'll get a better feel for the whole persona thing. Relax - no one expects you to show up ready to go. We were all newbies once!

Persona resources

Welcome to the SCA! There are a number of resources you may find helpful. The SCA Inc. maintains a newcomer information page at http://www.sca.org/officers/chatelain/newcomers.html

In addition, you may want to subscribe to the SCANewcomers list on YahooGroups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SCAnewcomers/ (disclaimer: I happen to be one of the moderators of this list, but that's not why I'm recommending it)

In your local area, there should be an officer called a Chatelain(e) or Hospitaler. (The "e" version of the Chatelain(e) title is for a female; without the final "e" is for a male.) This is a person whose job is specifically to help welcome newcomers to the SCA and help them get acquainted. They can give you some basic persona advice, or they may refer you to someone else in the group such as the Herald or Pursuivant.

Finally, in the "shameless plug" department, I'll mention that here at SCAtoday.net we have a category for newcomer information as well: http://www.scatoday.net/newcomers

Some of these resources are not specific to persona advice, but they are a starting point that can get you in touch with more specialized helpers.

Hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Justin
