Do women buy male-narrated fiction?

On her blog Nan Hawthorne's Booking the Middle Ages, Nan discusses a study by certain publishers of whether women readers of historical fiction will buy book narrated by male characters.

According to some in the publishing industry, women will not buy historical novels narrated by males and there are not enough men who read historicals to warrant publishing those with a male voice. This has led to the rejection of a number of manuscripts.
