EurekAlert: Experts from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England are studying
mysterious markings on sandstone boulders.
Dr Aron Mazel, a research associate with the School of Historical Studies for
the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, is working with a team of scientists to
explain puzzling markings carved into a sandstone boulder. The stone was
discovered by a Northumberland farmhand and include spherical and heart shapes,
several scores and what appears to be a footprint.
Dr Mazel said: "We have absolutely no idea what they
are, as they are nothing like anything we or anybody else we have talked to
have seen before. They are not the cup and ring marks which we have been
studying as part of the Northumberland prehistoric rock art project - they
appear to be more recent than that."
The experts are consulting with English Heritage and The Royal Commission on
the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.
