Putting a face to the name: Lucrezia Borgia

A claim has been made that the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia) has the only known formal portrait of Lucrezia Borgia in existence.

NGV conservator Carl Villis has revealed that the person in the painting known as 'Portrait of a Youth' since it was purchased in 1965, is, in fact, Lucrezia Borgia, Duchess of Ferrarra. The oval painting has also now been attributed to famed Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni di Niccolo de Luteri, better known as Dosso Dossi (c. 1490-1542). Mr Villis undertook a four year scientific and cultural study on the painting, purchased by the gallery in 1965.
