The map, created in 1507, is on permanent display at the Library of Congress, and seems to include accurate details of South America's western coast. "There is some probability that Waldseemueller knew something that is no longer extant -- information that we don't have," John W. Hessler of the Library of Congress said.

Scholars are still puzzled by 16h century map created by German cartographer Martin Waldseemueller which depicts a vast ocean west of the Americas years before its discovery by Vasco Núñez de Balboa.
