14th century silver mount discovered in County Durham, England

A metal detector hobbyist has discovered a 14th century silver mount, believed to have been used "as a decorative item on leather clothes," near Barnard Castle, County Durham, England. (photo)

The jewelry, which is 75% silver, has been turned over to the British Museum for evaluation. Richard Hunter, who found the piece, said, “You don’t really make money out of metal detecting unless you are very lucky, but I don’t drink or smoke, so it is my hobby.”
