Fiber Fiesta

The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta 2009 is the seventh biennial show dedicated to fiber arts education and to the display of fiber-related artwork. Hosted by the Albuquerque Fiber Arts Council, Inc. (AFAC), a tax-exempt, non-profit organization, the Fiesta includes both juried and judged works organized by 16 co-sponsoring New Mexico fiber arts guilds. Over 500 juried and judged exhibits will be displayed in this show.

Thursday, May 21 10-7 PM
Friday, May 22 10-7 PM
Saturday, May 23 10-5 PM

Plans for the 2009 Fiesta have been completed, although if history is any indication, detail work will continue right up to opening day! There are two major changes from the last Fiesta. First, the Fiesta is moving to bigger and better quarters in the Manuel Lujan Building, still on the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds! Second, an assortment of Fiesta Classes has been scheduled to take place on-site in a classroom-dedicated space. We are very excited to add classes to our venue as Fiesta attendees have been asking for them for years and we believe that the classes will be a valuable addition to the Fiesta experience!

The Call for Entry brochure is completed and available on this website. Click on 2009 Fiesta Exhibit Entry for complete details on entering one or more of your creations and to download entry forms. It is not too early to start planning your entry strategy now! (Entry deadline is March 1, 2009.) Artists are allowed to enter 3 items in any one Division and up to 6 items total in any combination of Divisions, (i.e.) 3 entries in the sewing division, plus 1 entry each in the quilting, beadwork and mixed-media divisions for a total of 6. We know that fiber artists are jacks-of-all-trades, crossing over into multiple fiber art disciplines; we want to give everyone the opportunity to show a variety of their creative efforts. The Fiesta is a juried show, so enter your very best!

The Fiesta is pleased to be hosting Dorothy Bunny Bowen, internationally recognized rozome artist as the 2009 Fiesta Featured Artist. Ms. Bowen will be on site throughout the Fiesta with her fiber art show, “Out of Time: Ten Thousand Days with a Brush”. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to view an extraordinary body of work while visiting with an exceptional artist!

The 2009 Fiesta will be presenting “Flora”, a collection of both vintage and new hand-made lace from The Lace Museum in Sunnyvale, California (552 S. Murphy, Sunnyvale, CA 94086).

The Educational Fiber Arts Exhibit of 2007, “Feel the Fiber” will be back by popular demand, updated and expanded; as we are constantly reminded, all of us could use more fiber in our diets, so consider this doctor’s orders and check out the new and improved educational fiber art exhibit in 2009!

The Fiesta Fashion Shows will be back, again hosted by the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Sewing Guild. Artists from all fiber art disciplines will be back on the stage, a newer and larger stage than ever before, “strutting” their stuff. The Fiesta Fashion Shows have always been popular and we expect the 2009 Fiesta will be producing even larger shows than in the past! The fashion show times and forms for participating in a show will be on this website when they are made available, sometime early in the 2009 calendar year.

The Fiesta Vendor Mall will again include many of our favorite purveyors of fiber materials and fiber art. We have even more space in our new digs, so will be adding a few more vendors to our already outstanding list. A complete listing of 2009 Fiesta Vendors will be posted on this website when the list is finalized, so keep your eyes peeled (and save your pennies for a shopping blow-out)!

2009 Fiesta Special Event –
The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta has traditionally featured a special event that promotes a worthy non-profit cause or organization. The 2009 Fiesta has selected the Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity to be the recipient of all the proceeds generated by our special event, “An Old Fashioned Christmas”. The Fiesta will be collecting hand-made ornaments and small accompanying donations to decorate up to 3 large Christmas trees. The trees will be on display for the duration of the Fiesta with raffle tickets being sold on site. Raffle winners will each take a tree, all of its ornaments and a specially prepared catalogue describing every ornament, including its maker, place of origin and creation technique. All donation and raffle monies will go directly to Habitat for Humanity. Donation of an ornament is open to everyone and we hope to see a huge response from across the country in support or this worthy cause.

Hope to see you and your fiber art creations at the 2009 Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta, so mark us in on your 2009 calendar of events! The Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta will be held in Albuquerque, NM at the Expo New Mexico, home of the New Mexico State Fair (one block North of Central Avenue on San Pedro NE). Our new location at the Expo is the Manuel Lujan Building. Admission is $5/ day (children 12 and under are free). Multi-day passes will be available.
