An 800-year-old Torah will begin a year-long display at the Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel in
Westwood.
A centuries-old Torah has begun a new chapter in its long and traveled life.
The sacred text originated on the Island of Rhodes and was protected during the
Nazi occupation of the island by the Muslim Turkish community. In 1984, the
Torah was moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina where it has been kept by a
Sephardic community in the Chalom Synagogue. Now, thanks to American attorney
Aron Hasson, founder of the Rhodes Jewish Historical Foundation, the scroll has
been moved again, this time to Los Angeles.
