Lakenheath dig reveals 450 Saxon graves

Over 400 graves dating to the Saxon period have been discovered at the site of a road project near the RAF facility Lakenheath in Suffolk, England.

The site had been previously investigated and had yielded some graves, but the vast scope of the cemetery was not known until recently. "The importance of Lakenheath is how much we have been able to dig over the years. We have got a complete archaeological landscape and can chart the occupation base from really very early on – which is what makes it very exciting," said Jo Caruth, senior project officer for Archaeological Services.
