1200-year-old Leshan Buddha spared by earthquake

The devastating earthquake in China's southwestern Sichuan Province has spared the world's tallest statue of Buddha. The 71-meter tall Buddha, which is a world heritage site, draws millions of visitors to the province each year.

"This earthquake has exacted a tremendous toll on this province and on this country," said Chen Bo, an official at the site's management office. "We are glad the Buddha statue didn't suffer damage."

Tourists are encouraged to postpone visits to the site which has barred visitors from approaching the base of the statue.
