Tourists Banned from China's Great Wall

Large sections of the Great Wall of China have been closed to tourists due to detereoration. Time and tourists have accomplished what invaders could not: destruction of China's Great Wall. As of August 1, 2003, those wishing to visit the Wall will be restricted to areas which have been restored and designated as tourist sites. In most areas, the Wall has crumbled to a ruin due to the weather and to locals who steal the stones for their own use. The Wall runs nearly 3,000 kilometers through remote and mountainous terrain, and now those wishing to visit these remote areas will be faced with a fine if they are caught.
