Will Lindisfarne Gospels return north?

The flack over the return of cultural treasures to their native lands has started again, this time over the Lindisfarne Gospels, the priceless 8th century manuscripts currently residing in the British library in London.

Like Scotland's cry for the return of the Lewis Chessmen, Northumbria would like to see their regional treasure returned to the North of its origins. a spokesman for the Library said, "The British Library Board has a statutory responsibility to ensure the long-term preservation of the Lindisfarne Gospels, and this would be impossible to manage if the gospels were permanently moved from the British Library."
