Roman burial ground discovered in the Blacklands

The remains of four adults dating to the 1st century have been discovered in Staverton near Trowbridge, England. The area is known to locals as the Blacklands and is said to be haunted. (photo of Roman coin)

"Local legend had it that Blacklands was a burial site for plague victims, but there was another theory that Blacklands relates to the black patches left in the soil by Roman burial grounds," said local historian Pete Lavis. This theory seems to be supported by the discovery of numerous Roman artifacts.
