Archaeologists investigate medieval disaster

British archaeologists are digging through centuries of rubble to search for clues to a medieval disaster: the burning of Mansfield Woodhouse and its church in 1304.

The event is documented in Nottinghamshire records, but no evidence of the disaster has yet been found. The team hopes to remedy this. Community archaeologist Emily Gillott said, "We know the church was involved in the fire and though it has been rebuilt several times it is in the same location. So we will start near the church and hopefully we will find a layer of burning and see how far it extends."
