Re-enactors Stage Siege of Orleans in the Ukraine

Hundreds of history buffs recreate a battle from the Hundred Years War over a weekend in the Ukraine. The Hundred Years War holds a great fascination for many Europeans, even those whose nations were not directly involved. Recently over 700 re-enactors from the Ukraine, Russia, Hungary and Romania gathered to take part in a recreation of the Siege of Orleans in which the French fortress held firm against an English onslaught. Re-enactors could choose to portray historic figures, but anyone who wished to take part was required to "pass a history test and demonstrate a detailed knowledge of their hero's biography."

The Siege of Orleans campaign developed from a Soviet war game and organizers hope that it will someday become a recognized sport. Ukrainian television covered the event.
