Rude runes in Norway

Medieval people were not as different as their modern versions when it comes to rude language and  graffiti, a fact discovered by a team of archaeologists in Oslo, Norway who came across three double entendre characters carved in runes on a piece of wood denoting either the first letters in the ruinic alphbet or Fuþ, the Old Norse word for the female genitalia. St. Augustine dig: "a 16th century jackpot!"

Archaeologists working at the site of a new garden at the gallery of the Art Association in St. Augustine, Florida, have unearthed "some of the earliest artifacts found in the downtown area." City archaeologist Carl Halbirt said, "This is a 16th century jackpot!" WFGA, Jacksonville, has the story. (video)

Precious manuscripts threatened by jihadists in Iraq

The fighting in Iraq continues to threaten, not just the populace, but historical treasures and manuscripts. Recently a Dominican Order of priests, known as the Order of Preachers, managed to rescue a number of these precious documents when Islamic State jihadists advanced into the region. (photos)

Doctoral thesis changes history of Swedish glass

Archaeologist Anna Ihr's doctoral dissertation, Becoming Vitrified, shows that the glass industry in Sweden is much older than previously believed, as early as the 13th century. The thesis describes how different vitrified, or glassy, materials can be interpreted and analysed.

SCA Inc. discontinues Known World Mail

Effective February 1, 2015, the SCA is discontinuing its Known World Mail, a hosted mail service previously offered to SCA members.

Stonehenge in 8th century poem?

The 8th century, Old English poem called The Ruin may be the oldest surviving literature to mention Stonehenge, says medieval liguist Dr Graeme Davis. The poem refers to stones called "the old ones" or the "elders."
