The Medievalist.net blog reports that after more than 60 years, the University of Melbourne has cancelled its Viking Studies program. The program included instruction in Viking history and the Old Norse language.

Tapestry map shows Midlands of Shakespeare's time

A huge (4 feet x 6 feet, or 122 x 183 cm) 16th century tapestry map has returned to Oxford's Bodleian Library where it will be placed on display. The map was one of four such maps and was long thought to be lost. The Bodleian now owns three with the fourth in the Warwickshire Museum.

2nd century Roman street found in Jerusalem

Archaeologists have discovered a Roman street dating to the 2nd-4th centuries in the Western Wall tunnels of the city of Jerusalem. The side street is believed to have connected two major roads near Temple Mount.

First Bulgarian Empire seals found

State seals, dating to the first Bulgarian Empire (681-1018), were discovered recently during excavation for public buildings. The seals are believed to have belonged to the rulers Simeon and Petar.

British archaeologists are digging through centuries of rubble to search for clues to a medieval disaster: the burning of Mansfield Woodhouse and its church in 1304.
