Life in 17th century England was dangerous, if the death records from the town of Lamplugh can be believed. Causes of death listed ranged from "Sleep coughing" to "Broke his neck robbing a hen roost" to "Frighted to Death by faries." Sarah Getty of the London Metro has the story.

The Emperor Maxentius was defeated by Constantine I in a battle in the year 321 C.E., but his followers apparently concealed his scepter, ceremonial weapons, and other regalia from Constantine's forces by burying the items. Archaeologists excavating Palatine Hill in Rome have located the cache, which is notable for the condition of the objects.
Prince Charles Shares Royal Recipes
Britain's Prince Charles shares family recipes dating back to the time of Henry VIII in a new cookbook. The Duchy Originals Cookbook will feature such delicacies as "Maids of Honour Tarts," said to have been given to Anne Boleyn by the King.

Each year for the last 40 years, the centuries-old symbol of Christmas in Sweden, a huge straw goat, has been built in Gavle, Sweden. Only 10 of them have seen the new year; the rest have been torched, run over by cars, knocked over or otherwise destroyed by vandals.

Count Sir Sarnac Kir (Ba'adur), eighth King of Ealdormere, died on December 4 after a brief illness. Friends in Ealdormere, the Midrealm, and elsewhere this week must say farewell to a Knight who will be fondly remembered.

Archaelogists from the University of Leicester have found a fragment of lead that greatly adds to their knowledge of the city's Roman past. The "curse tablet" bears a list of 18 names; until now, only a few names of Roman residents of the city were known.

When Carenza bint Asya (Diana Eckart) became involved with the SCA, she was given the choice of pursuing a Viking persona or that of a belly dancer. She chose the dancer.
