In search of Hastings

Tradition (and tourism) have long held that Battle Abbey was the site of the famous Battle of Hastings. However, while as many as 10,000 men may have died there, no bodies or major artifacts have been found. Historian John Grehan thinks that the battle may really have taken place in Caldbec Hill, a mile away.

A team of dedicated volunteers, led by Mistress Catrin o’r Rhyd For, has created an online magazine/blog, the East Kingdom Gazette,  "which provides timely information about activities relevant to the East Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism."

Women were rarely recognized as poets in Tudor England, but the chance discovery of a love poem by Elizabeth Dacre to Sir Anthony Coke has given new insight into courtly love in Elizabeth I's time. Dr. Elaine Treharne of Stanford University discusses the poem in podcast for WAMC's Academic Minute.

First Pennsic Cryptogram Solved

The first of  a set of cryptograms from Pennsic has been solved.  Sir Ephraim ben Shlomo (Middle) successfully deciphered one of the puzzles to reveal the text on the flyer of the original May Day Party.

New book reveals Scotland's lost gardens

English spies in the employ of Henry VIII would never believe that their maps could lead to the re-discovery of forgotten and abandoned gardens in Scotland. Their maps, along with aerial photography, historic documents, and even poetry, were used by Marilyn Brown for her book Scotland's Lost Gardens.

No RIP for royal heads

With the discovery of the possible remains of England's King Richard III, thoughts turn to the fates of other kings who found no peace in their rest. Greig Watson of BBC News has the story.
