Jewish bread stamp found in Acre

In the Israeli city of Acre around 500 CE, Larry the Baker left his mark. A ceramic Byzantine bread stamp has been unearthed bearing the classic Jewish seven branch Menorah and the name "Laurentius" written out in Greek letters.

From hoodies and sneakers to armor and swords

Visitors to the first Antioch Invitational in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, were offered a glimpse of the Middle Ages when the local chapter of the Society for Creative Anachronism demonstrated its skills at the Albion Fairgrounds. Reporter Mitch Thompson of the Maple Ridge Times has the story.

Maria Vretmark and the mystery of the king's tomb

Maria Vretmark has a "fantastic story" to tell: Who is buried in King Magnus Ladulås' tomb? New DNA tests carried out by her team have determined that at least some of the bodies in the tomb in central Stockholm, Sweden are several centuries younger than the reign of Magnus, who ruled from 1275 until 1290.

Restored Roman helmet to go on display

A Roman helmet found in Leicestershire, England is going on display after a 10 year restoration effort. The elaborate helmet dates to the 1st century CE.

World class fencer Bob Anderson dies in England

For five decades, British sword master Bob Anderson graced the screen as fight director and stunt performer with such luminaries as Errol Flynn and Antonio Banderas. He played Darth Vader in fight sceens for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Anderson died January 1, 2012 in England at the age of 89.

Five Peerages announced at al Barran's Midwinter event

Master Andrixos of the Kingdom of Calontir reports that five names were added to the Rolls of Peerage al Barran's Midwinter by Their Majesties Kynan and Gilliana of the Kingdom of the Outlands.

Search on for missing SCA member

Mark Allen Mussack, an SCA member from the Barony of Atenveldt has been reported missing. He was last seen December 31, 2011 when dropped off by his wife at a Greyhound bus station in Vernal, Arizona. Mussack was traveling to Denver, Colorado.

Will skeletons tell story of Norwegian town?

The people of Stavanger, Norway are on a quest to discover the exact year their town was founded. A good starting place may be with the huge collection of human bones dating to the Middle Ages found beneath their cathedral.

The day of wine and board games

Consider this: a day lolling around a winery, a glass of wine or mead in your hand, and a game of Primero or Hnefatafl laid out before you. Such a day will be possible when the local SCA group invades Virginia's Hilltop Berry Farm for Medieval Games Day on January 28, 2012. Rebekah Carter of the NewsLeader (Staunton, Virginia) has the story.

British Museum given "gifts to the gods"

Curators at the British Museum are happy to accept a collection of "over 3,000 objects including coinage, jewellery, furniture fittings and pottery vessels" thrown in the River Tees at Piercebridge in Roman times as gifts to the gods. (photos)

The Art History News blog has published the full transcribed inventory of Catherine Howard's jewels, from the manuscript in the British Library. The transcription was done by Tudor historian Alasdair Hawkyard and compiled by Nicholas Bristowe, who was clerk of the King's wardrobes.

Roman wine not to be opened before its time

Curators at the Historical Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer, Germany know they have a well-aged wine, but are unwilling to crack open the bottle for a taste. The vintage in question is a 4th century wine found in a Roman grave, which has stood in the same spot in the museum for 100 years.
