Byzantine exhibit showcased on History Today website

The May 2012 issue of History Today features a slideshow from a major exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art: Byzantium and Islam: Age of Transition. The exhibit runs through July 8, 2012.

Pennsic Mayor responds to concerns about Cooper's Lake hydraulic fracturing contract

The owners of Cooper's Lake Campground, site of the SCA's Pennsic War, have signed a mineral rights contract that allows hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") on the property at some future time. The contract has led to concerns from some Pennsic attendees, and a blog post by this year's Pennsic Mayor responding to those concerns.

Pathologist finds answers to medieval mysteries

French pathologist Philippe Charlier has used high-tech imagery and DNA analysis to answer questions about Joan of Arc, Napoleon, and a mistress of King Henri II of France. He is now turning his attention to Richard the Lionheart.

Pope Benedict XVI has canonized Hildegard von Bingen, the 12th century German nun who is popularly known today as a mystic and composer.

Duke Dag Thorgrimsson has won the Midrealm Crown Tournament, claiming the right to crown Duchess AnneMarie de Garmeaulx as Queen of Love and Beauty.

Evidence of smuggling found in Roman shipwreck

Italian archaeologists have recently excavated a 3rd century Roman shipwreck off the coast of Marausa Lido, a beach resort near Trapani. On board they found eveidence of smuggling in the form of unusual tubular tiles, taken from North Africa to Rome. (photo)

Medievalists converge on Kalamazoo

The annual rite of spring at Western Michigan University has little to do with student water fights or protests, and everything to do with international scholars on such estoeric topics as the life cycle of medieval monasteries or medieval medicine, when the university hosts the biennial International Congress on Medieval Studies.

Holy Robe shines spotlight on Trier

In 1500, the Holy Robe, believed by Catholics to have been worn by Jesus, was installed as a relic in the ancient Catholic cathedral in Trier, Germany, once the Roman capital north of the Alps. Since then, the robe has been exhibited only 17 times, and is currently on display until May 13, 2012.

New Glastonbury Thorn vandalized

In 2010 vandals damaged the fabled Holy Thorn tree of Glastonbury, England, said to have been a cutting of the thorn first planted by Joseph of Arimathea. Now the replacement tree, planted soon after, has also been vandalized.

Janyn Fletcher has announced that the 2nd annual St. Sebastian's archery shoot at Pennsic 41 will be held on Saturday 4 August, 2012 from 9am - 4pm.

Cirencester's Roman amphitheatre to be revamped

The Cirencester town council has plans for their city's Roman ruins, including "the remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain."
