6th century baptistery found in Kosovo

Turkish archaeologists have discovered a baptistery dating from the Byzantine period in Kosovo’s ancient city of Ulpiana. “Baptisteries are rarely found in this region. We have succeeded in making a very important finding, as part of the first excavation Turkey has carried out abroad," said Professor Haluk Çetinkaya who led the team. (photo)

13th century silver brooch declared treasure

In 2011, metal detectorist Frank Kurzeja discovered a silver brooch 10 inches beneath the soil near Cowfold, England. The brooch has recently been declared treasure. (photo)

The Board of Directors seeks to explore the possibility of creating a new Society-wide Peerage to recognize as Peers those participants who meet the general requirements for a Patent of Arms and who demonstrate prowess in Rapier and/or Cut & Thrust Combat.

Wind farm could save Lochindorb Castle

A 17-turbine wind farm could be the benefactor of a 14th century Scottish castle if a project proposal from Infinergy is successful. Lochindorb Castle, the home of Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch, is owned by Cawdor Estates, a partner in the venture. (photo)

Byzantine jewelry sparkles in New York gallery show

Les Enluminures gallery in New York City will present Byzantium and the West: Jewelry in the First Millennium, its fall 2012 show featuring Byzantine jewelry from the 3rd through 10th centuries. The exhibit will be open November 2 to 30, 2012 with  possible auction taking place in December.

In search of Hastings

Tradition (and tourism) have long held that Battle Abbey was the site of the famous Battle of Hastings. However, while as many as 10,000 men may have died there, no bodies or major artifacts have been found. Historian John Grehan thinks that the battle may really have taken place in Caldbec Hill, a mile away.
