Sahti: the drink of Viking champions

Some years ago, archaeologists discovered the remains of a Scandinavian ale called Sahti inside a barrel in a Viking ship burial. Now modern brewers are trying out the ancient recipe.

Her Majesty Maerwynn Qatan, Queen of Calontir, has posted a list of combatants and their consort for the upcoming Crown Tournament.

"Mirror of History" reunited at the Getty

Beware of loaning precious books! That should be the lesson learned by the King of France who, in 1413, loaned the 4 volume manuscript of the Mirror of History, a medieval history of the world from the Creation to the Middle Ages, to Duke Louis VII of Bavaria, who promptly lost them. (photos)

Mongol history on Internet Archive

The Internet Archive has created a facsimile of the book History of the Mongols from the 9th to the 19th century by Major-General Sir A Cunningham. The nearly 800-page volume can be read as a book online.

SCA makes NPR's "50 Wonderful Things From 2010" list

On her NPR pop culture blog Monkey See, Linda Holmes relates the 50 Wonderful Things From 2010 she experienced including "The last 15 minutes of Lost" and a television episode involving the Society for Creative Anachronism.

Modern illumination

In recent years, it has become the vogue to learn calligraphy for special occasions. Now the medieval artform of illumination may also see a modern revival. (photos)

SCA group celebrates 12th Night in historic West Virginia church

Members of the Incipient Shire of Ballachlagan (Kingdom of AEthelmearc) recently teamed with students from Brooke High School to celebrate Twelfth Night at Olde St. John Episcopal Church in Wheeling, West Virginia. Warren Scott of the Herald Star attended the event.

Knights Errant combat will take place from 11am to 1pm the morning of War Collegium.

This will be taking place at Sir Bjorn's home in RivenOak (Chico, CA). He has a covered area for fighting so weather will not be a problem. There will be food and drink provided. If you would like to stay Saturday night, there is crash space available and RivenOak's regular practice is Sunday. Hope to see you!

The hard times of winter have brought the local trolls raiding to close to home so we must unite to fight them back to the mountains to defend our livelihoods.
