Possible Roman Imperial shipyard discovered in Italy

Experts have discovered a huge building near the center of the complex at the ancient port of Rome which they believe was used for the maintenance of ships. If correct, the building would be part of the Roman Imperial shipyard, the "largest of its kind in Italy or the Mediterranean."

A large medieval seal dating to the 13th or 14th century has been discovered in a field in Surrey, England. The mystery of the seal is that it is believed to have originated at Stone Priory in north Staffordshire. (photo)

SCA armor standards change as of November 5

The Society Earl Marshal has announced revisions to the equipment standards for armoured combat in the SCA, effective November 5.

16th century Spanish artifacts found in Georgia

Jewelry and other artifacts from the 1500s have been found in an excavation of a Native American village in Georgia (USA). The artifacts suggest that conquistador Hernando de Soto may have travelled far off course in his exploration of Florida and points west.

Art historian finds devil is really in the details

An art historian claims to have found an image of the devil in the fluffy clouds of a 13th century fresco by the early Renaissance artist Giotto. The fesco, in the Assisi Bascilica in Italy, depicts the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

Valizan changes bellydance stereotype in southern Ontario

Canadian bellydancer Rob Galbraith, known as Valizan in the SCA, considers himself a shy person, but those who watch his performance as a male bellydancer, complete with scimitar, would be surprised. Jeff Mahoney of the Toronto Star has the story.
