World's oldest leather shoe found

Archaeologists have found a leather show dating back 5,500 years in a cave in Armenia. The shoe is cut from one piece of cow leather and sewn together with eyelets.

Milisent Vibert becomes Laurel in the Midrealm

Mistress Llyrydwyl Merewenna reports that, at Their recent Crown Tournament, Their Majesties Radagaisus and Ceinwen of the Middle Kingdom, placed Baroness Milisent Vibert on vigil to contemplate elevation to the Order of the Laurel.

NMS to increase to US$5 effective July 1, 2010

A recent decision by the Board of Directors of the SCA, Inc. will increase the Non-Member Surcharge, the additional charge paid by adult non-SCA members at local events, to US$5. The change will take effect July 1, 2010.

Vicar invokes medieval archery practice law

The vicar of Collingbourne Ducis in Wiltshire has enforced the ancient law, never taken off the books, that allows her to summon the village to archery practice. Those complying with the call to service were rewarded with food and drink.

Fighting in the SCA: “It’s a rush.”

Fighters from Canton of Glaslyn in the Kingdom of Ansteorra faced off recently for a practice in North Lakes Park, to the delight of spectators. Reporter Candace Carlisle of the Denton (Texas) Record Chronicle was on hand for the story. (photos and video)

"Light of the Sufis" at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts

Now through August 8, 2010, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts will host Light of the Sufis: The Mystical Arts of Islam, an exhibit that "focuses on some of the most important Sufi ideas and practices that found expression through the arts of the Islamic world."

New Sanai verses discovered

An Iranian scholar has discovered 205 previously unknown quatrains of the 12th century Sufi poet Sanai Ghaznavi.

Anglo-Saxon settlement discovered in the Cotswolds

Steve Sheldon, of Cotswold Archaeology, has called the recent discovery of an Anglo-Saxon timber hall in Cheltenham, England "one of the best finds of his career." The settlement is believed to date between the 6th and 8th centuries.
