"Horrible Histories" author calls historians horrible

Terry Deary's Horrible Histories series appeals to schoolchildren by including disgusting and true historical details, such as the purpose of the Roman vomitorium. But the author finds modern historians even more nauseating than the Romans.

Galleon San Salvador to be rebuilt in San Diego

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is planning to build a replica of explorer Juan Cabrillo's ship, the San Salvador. The San Salvador was the first European expedition to the area, exploring San Diego Bay in 1542.

Former tour guide campaigns for statue of Henry VII

Melanie Phillips, a former tour guide at Pembroke Castle in Wales, has begun a campaign to construct a memorial to King Henry VII, who was born in the castle.

During practice, members of the Worcester Hurling Club hit a sliotar (ball) with their hurleys (stick). That's Worcester, Massachusetts, not England.

Rapier student discussion list created

Lady Keina de Fierins, of the Kingdom of Meridies, has created a Yahoo Groups discusion lists for rapier students throughout the Known World. Called Students of the Blade, the group focusses on student questions before they escalate to teacher level.

Artemisia's First "Medieval Prom" a Great Success

Artemisia held its first "Medieval Prom" last week at Uprising XXIV in the Barony of 1000 Eyes, to much acclaim by adult and teenage SCAdians alike.

Mistress Rowan of Hakesleah reports that a vigil was held June 11, 2010 for Lady Gianetta de Bene to contemplate elevation to the Order of the Laurel.

Textile tour of London and Bath

Melissa Leventon, former Textile Curator-in-Charge at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will lead a nine-day tour of museums, artisans’ studios and textile art dealers September 24 to October 2, 2010. The tour will focus on the cities of London and Bath.

Tournament of Horse and Falcon photos online

Freer Gallery to present exhibit on Chinese painting

The Freer Gallery of Art in Washngton, D.C. will present Masterpieces of Chinese Painting June 12 - November 28, 2010. The exhibit will showcase Chinese painting from the late 10th to the early 18th century.

SCAdians bring appreciation of mead to southeastern Pennsylvania

For the past two years, Marc Johnson and Sheree Krasley, who met in the SCA, have collaborated to bring the mead experience to southeastern Pennsylvania with their Stonekeep Meadery. Amy Strauss of the Phoenix (Phoenixville, PA) has the story.

Pyramids offer weathertight camping

America's Finest News Source suggests that the Egyptian pyramids may have been created for accommodation at a weekend camping event in a historic precursor to the SCA.

Conri Mac Eoghain to participate in USA National Gymnastics Championships

Don Eogan Ua Confraich of the Kingdom of Caid reports that SCA member Lord Conri Mac Eoghain has qualified to participate in the USA National Gymnastics Championships in Virginia Beach, VA in late June, 2010.

Gladiator Graveyard

Archaelogists, working at the Driffield Terrace site in York have unearthed some 80 skeletons dating from the 1st through 4th centuries CE.  Based on current evidence, they believe it to be a Gladiator graveyard from the Roman settlement of Eboracum.

Questing for an equestrian dream
