[EAS] Fall Crown Tournament

The Shire of Quintavia, is honored to host the Fall Crown Tournament of King Konrad von Ulm and Queen Brenwen the Faire, to be held October 31, 2009, at Camp Marshall (Worcester County 4H Center, Inc.), located at 92 McCormick Road, Spencer, MA 01562.

A newcomer's view of Slay the Hydra

Thomas Willoughby of the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann, loaned his camera to a new fighter of his acquaintance who was attending his first event, Slay the Hydra, with the instruction, "take a picture of ANYTHING that he found interesting." The results can be seen in an album of photos posted on Flickr.

Translations of classic fencing texts released

Richard, from the Kingdom of Lochac, reports that two classic fencing manuals are now available for study. A new translation by Ken Mondschein of Camillo Agrippa's manual of 1553, the earliest Italian rapier text, is available for purchase, while the English translation of Ettenhard's manual from 1675 can be read online.

Gwynna Emrys elevated to Pelican at Meridies Coronation

Yves de Fortanier, Clerk of Precedence for the Kingdom of Meridies, reports that at Their recent Coronation, Their Majesties Boru and Deirdre elevated Viscountess Gwynna Emrys to the Order of the Pelican.

The St. Albans Psalter to be displayed in Germany

The St. Albans Psalter, one of the world's best examples of manuscripts from the Romanesque period, is a cherished possession of the the Dombibliothek Hildesheim in Hildesheim, Germany. The removal of its binding has enabled the Dom-Museum Hildesheim to display individual leaves from the book in a special exhibit which will run December 9, 2009 until January 24, 2010. (photos)

Mongolian games celebrate "manly sports"

An annual festival dating to the 13th century is considered the Mogolian "Olympics." The event features the "manly sports" — horse racing, wrestling and archery. Louisa Lim of NPR has the story. (audio)

Kingdom of Acre medieval festival video online

Julie O'Grady has created a video highlighting events at the recent Sands Point Medieval Fair hosted by the Kingdom of Acre (Medieval Scenarios and Recreations, Ltd.). The video is available on YouTube.

"Zombies" attack Gleann Abhann Royals

The recent Coronation of William II and Onora II was not without incident as Their Majesties' retinue was overcome with a fit of zombie-ism. The frightening event was chronicled by Kingdom Historian Baroness Barbara Sterling in a missive to Baroness Morgana of the Mists.

7th century Islamic manuscripts from the J.J. Marcel collection online

In 1864, the Imperal Library of Russia acquired the "collection of ancient Kufic Qur'ans on parchment bought from Mme Desnoyer, heiress of Arabist Marcel who was among the members of the learned French expedition to Egypt equipped by Bonapart," a magnificent set of about 2000 parchment leaves in Arabic, illuminated in full color and gold.

Barony of Atenveldt 40th Anniversary photos online

West Kingdom victor offers romantic proposal

West Kingdom herald Caoilinn Rose Maddox gives a "herald's point of view" of the recent Crown Tournament in the Kingdom of the West. The Tourney was won by Sir Uther Schiemann der Hunt, inspired by Kára Báreksdóttir, who received a romantic proposal. (photos)

SCA: "like adults playing dress up and getting away with it"

The Barony of Ravensfort, in the Houston, Texas area, turns 20 this year. They celebrated the anniversary at their annual event, Defender of the Fort. Matthew Jackson of the Huntsville Item spoke recently with Seneschal Lady Giovanna Lena Caronna (Carolyn Pace) about SCA life.

Abbasid Period village found in Qatar

A joint team of French and Qatari archaeologists is excited about the discovery of a 9th century town, "a remarkable village of 220 houses, two forts and two mosques," buried for centuries beneath the sands of northwest Qatar.

Murder or execution in Venta Icenorum?

"This is an abnormal burial," said archaeologist Will Bowden of the University of Nottingham, about the discovery of a male skeleton, buried with his hands tied behind his back. "It could be that the person was murdered or executed, although this is still a matter of speculation." (photo)

Midrealm Fall 2009 Crown List announced

Their Majesties Dag and AnneMarie, King and Queen of the Middle Kingdom, have announced the list of combatants for Their Crown Tournament which will take place October 17, 2009 in the Barony of Illiton.
