Fountain project reveals medieval treasures in Peterborough

A project to install fountains in Peterborough, England's Cathedral Square has given archaeologists a glimpse of life in the medieval town. "We have found a whole manner of objects, from coins to really chunky old door keys," said city museum archaeologist Ben Robinson.

After a 6th century earthquake destroyed the town of Dionisopolis, Byzantine emperors built a stronghold at Balchik, overlooking the Black Sea. Now a new team of experts hope to reveal more secrets of the site.

Recent high-resolution geophysical surveys of the Roman town of Venta Icenorum in Norfolk, England, show that the town may have included agricultural areas, a discovery that contradicts earlier theories of the town's dense population. (graphic)

Site of large Roman hospital found in Moravia

Once a part of a fortified complex, a Roman hospital, "described as the largest preserved site of its kind north of the Danube," has been found in South Moravia. The site dates to the 2nd century.

Sawayama Castle excavation captures romance of feudal Japan

Archaeologists working on the excavation of Sawayama Castle in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, hope that their discoveries will give new understanding to its owner, Ishida Mitsunari, whose defeat marked the end of the feudal Sengoku (Warring States) period.
