45th International Congress on Medieval Studies scheduled for May 2010

The 45th International Congress on Medieval Studies has been scheduled to take place in Kalamazoo, Michigan May 13-16, 2010. The Congress will feature "over 600 sessions of papers, panel discussions, round tables, workshops, and performances."

As the days grow shorter and the nights long and cold, the Sun seems to have died and left the world in darkness. Please join the ancient and glorious Barony of Loch Salann in celebrating the Winter Solstice and the return journey of the Sun. Activities will include dance class, an A&S heraldic display, High Court, a Grand Ball, and a Middle Eastern feast. Please note: Court will begin promptly at 2:30 PM so please plan accordingly.

he annual Southern Regional Collegium will be held on April 10, 2010, once again jointly hosted by the Barony of Loch Salann, the Barony of Gryphon's Lair, the Province of Arrows' Flight and the Shire of Cote du Ciel. Site yet to be determined, but will likely be in Davis County, UT (Gryphon's Lair).

Medieval pilgrimage topic of the 2010 Sewanee Medieval Colloquium

Coordinators have announced that "Pilgrimage in the Middle Ages" will be the theme for the Sewanee Medieval Colloquium to be held April 9-10, 2010 at the university of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee.

Historic Scotland experts were called in recently to assess damage to Mons Meg, the historic cannon on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, which has a broken wheel.

Medieval pine trees found in Norway

Norwegian scientists were surprised recently to find that dendrochronological dating showed fallen pine trees they were studying as part of climate research had died in the 14th century. Resin secreted by the dying trees is responsible for the "mummification."

Old Norse mythology "captures the public imagination"

Experts on Old Norse mythology met recently at the University of Aberdeen's Centre for Scandinavian Studies to take a look a fresh look at the religion.

Sorcha reports that she has created an album of photos from the knighting of Mari Alexander in the Kingdom of the West. The ceremony took place in Court at the Fall 2009 Cynaguan Coronet Tournament.

Metal detector finds UK£1m torcs

Metal detector enthusiast David Booth was "stunned" to learn that four Iron Age gold torcs, dating to late Roman times, could bring him over UK£1m. The torcs were discovered in September 2009 in Stirlingshire, Scotland. (photo & video)

Rolf and Aurora new Heirs to Cynagua
