The largest haul of Anglo-Saxon gold ever found has been discovered by a metal detector enthusiast on farmland in Staffordshire, it was revealed recently.

Bosphorus tunnel project creates "Indiana Jones-type" archaeological dig

When construction workers for Istanbul's overwhelmed subway system opened up a tunnel running under the Bosphorus Strait, they expected to begin a process to relieve the traffic congestion. Instead, they uncovered the lost Byzantine port of Theodosius, complete with "an ancient armada: 34 Byzantine ships ranging from dating between the 7th and 11th centuries AD."

Roman skeleton really Goth

The 5th century skeleton of a man, discovered in 1972 in Gloucester, England, has been identified as a Goth, originating from east of the Danube River. Experts feel that the man was most likely a Roman soldier.

US Army construction site unearths Roman settlement

A team of archaeologists from Mainz University have discovered what they believe is a 3rd century Roman settlement near Wiesbaden, Germany. The site was found during excavations for a new US$133 million Army Corps of Engineers housing project.

William Short, SCA member and author of the book Viking Weapons and Combat Techniques, will speak at the Fayetteville Free Library in Fayetteville, NY, on, October 29, 2009. The presentation will include a discussion of Viking fighting techniques and weapons.

[WES] Rapier Training Retreat

I will be holding a Rapier Clinic on the 14th and 15th of November at my residence in Delhi CA. The workshop will focus mostly on rapier/dagger and how to maximize your effectiveness with that form. The other focus will be on the psychology of historical fencing and how to control the fight.
