A team of archaeologists led by Nikolay Ovcharov have unearthed a 13th century church in Veliko Tarnovo. The site is believed to have once housed the relics of St. Ivan Rilski.

Medieval "beguine" movement still alive in Belgium

Life was tough for women in the 13th century, especially those who had lost their husbands and protectors to the Crusades. Experts believe this was the origin of the "beguines — a Roman Catholic laic order that began in the 13th century and branched across northwest Europe."

How do you say "football" in Welsh?

Perhaps football is not as modern of a game as we believed. References to versions of the game have been found as early as the 10th century in Welsh literature and in the Black Book of Carmarthen, the first manuscript written in Welsh, in the 13th.

Archaeologists working on a Roman site near Caerleon, Wales have discovered an extremely rare legionary's ceremonial lance. "I don't know of any of that type in Britain," said Dr Peter Guest. (video)

300 rare Jewish books returned to Israel from Iraq

300 rare Jewish books, confiscated from Iraq's Jewish community during the regime of Saddam Hussein, have been returned to Israel. The works included a 15th century commentary on the biblical Book of Job.

Medieval arts on display at Wick Avenue Festival

“'We give that learning back to the public by educating them. Then we encourage them to join us,' said Dirk Hermance, who was dressed in the loose-fitting clothing of a northern European merchant from the early 15th century." Hermance was speaking about the demo hosted by members of the Shire of Rivenvale recently in Youngstown, Ohio. Reporter Don Shilling of the Vindicator had the story. (photos)
