"I came for the fighting... I stayed for the friends"

SCA fighting is addictive. “I tried it, and I’ve been hooked. I came for the fighting and competition,” said Arthur Donadio, 40, a former football player who saw his opportunities for sport dwindling as he aged. “You stay for the friends you make and the opportunity to keep it going and teach other people.” John Ramsey of the Fayetteville Observer has the story.

SCA gear stolen in West Kingdom

Moira O'Connor reports that her vehicle containing SCA gear was stolen May 14, 2008, and asks that gentles in the SCA community keep an eye out for the stolen property.

Armor stolen in Meridies

Benedict Longsword of Monmouth reports that armor was stolen from the vehicle of Michael Ward (Ian Lowery) in Montgomery, Alabama during the weekend of May 10-11, 2008. Lord Benedict hopes that SCA members will be on the lookout for it.

Farewell to Yang the Nauseating, mka Robert Asprin

Yang the Nauseating, modernly known as Robert Lynn Asprin, was a well-known science fiction and fantasy author. In the SCA, he was one of the early members and was the founder of the Great Dark Horde. Asprin, born in 1946, died peacefully on May 22 at his home.

description:
Sharpen your quills and mark in your calenders that the sixth Cudgel War will be held at the traditional site in Kavalahti, Inkoo from 18th to 27th of July, 2008. Once again it is time to sweat on the battle field, fighting hard to end the oppression and then to cool down either in the lake or with a cold drink or a few.

For the heavy fighters we have several tourneys, including the (in)famous Nordic 1000, three days of war, plus plenty of structured fighter practices organized by Sir Siegfried and Sir GrimR. Of course we also have fencing, archery, arts and sciences as well as unforgettable sauna parties that last until the morning or beyond. Location:

Portrait of Shakespeare's patron discovered

Experts believe they have discovered a portrait of Henry Wriothesley, Shakespeare's only known patron, under a later portrait of his wife, Elizabeth Vernon. The painted-over image was discovered using X-ray technology. (photo)
