Mary Rose gets high-tech scan

Scientists at England's Diamond synchrotron are using intense light beams to help understand sulphur compounds in the timbers of the British warship Mary Rose.

Ancient Roman lighthouse discovered

Turkish archaeologists found a 2,000 year old lighthouse at the ancient Roman port of Patara. Built in the time of the Emperor Nero, it may be the oldest such structure that remains intact.

Renaissance Footnotes will hold a weekend-long, Italian Renaissance dance workshop November 29-30, 2008 at Hurst Village Hall near Reading, England.

Soon a new exhibition will be on display at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna: Treasures from the national Palace Museum, Taiwan begins at February 26, 2008 and runs until May 13, 2008.

"Magna Carta and the World of King John" at Penn State

The Magna Carta will be the focus of this year's Medieval Conference at Pennsylvania State University March 28-29, 2008. The conference will "examine various groups and institutions of that society, in attempt to fill in the background of the Great Charter: the world of King John, and additional sessions will deal with teaching about Magna Carta and its time period.

The University of St Andrews in Scotland is opening a new interdisciplinary center for Medieval Studies that is one of the largest such centers.

New regulations may limit use of black powder weapons

A plan to regulate antique firearms in New York City may have repercussions for re-enactors and museums who use black powder weapons. If passed, owners of these weapons would be required to submit to the same licensing rules as for other firearms.

Several Viking Age sites around the Baltic Sea have been proposed as UNESCO Heritage Sites. The locations include Haithabu, a village in Germany, and the Dannevirke, a series of earthen walls.

Archaeologists working on the excavation of a Roman fort near Calstock in Cornwall credit references to silver smelting in medieval documents for helping to locate the site.
