Join seekers of knowledge for a weekend of learning and sharing; night-time class slots will be offered to help beat the heat and expand class time. Hasten to reserve your chateau by the lake and a place at the table, as feast is limited to 150 for Lord Guillaume's European lowlands cuisine.

Venetian isolation hospital gives up secrets

Archaeologists are excited over the revelations discovered during the excavation of graves on Lazzaretto, an island in the lagoon of Venice where the city's sick were isolated. The intensive study has led to incredible discoveries involving disease, diet and genetics.

Ames, Iowa: medieval center

Ames, Iowa is definitely a center for medieval activities according to an article in the Iowa State Daily. Staff writer Jenn Hanson reports that both the Society of Creative Anachronism and the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society have chapters there.

Hellsgate Tournament

Attack of the Snowball

Kingdom Bardic Championship

Greetings unto the populace of An Tir, especially those whose passion tends towards bardic pursuits and the performing arts. The fifth Kingdom Bardic Championship (KBC) will be held this year on September 22th-23th.

Vulcanfeldt Folklife Festival & Demo

Their Excellencies Rolf and Ashley Longbow and the populace of Vulcanfeldt invite you to the silver anniversary of the Yakima Folklife Festival.

Alianora reports that Their majesties of the Kingdom of Atenveldt surprised one of Their scribes by offering her elevation to the Order of the Laurel.

Horse harness decoration found in Surrey

A bronze disc, believed to have decorated the harness of the horse of a 15th century lord, has been discovered in Surrey, England. The decoration may have belonged to Henry Stafford, the second Duke of Buckingham.

Daniel Frank Blanco born in the Barony of Atenveldt

Antonia Maria Falduto di Calabria and Leonardo Miguel di Segovia have announced the birth of their son Daniel Frank Blanco on June 18, 2007 in the Kingdom (and Barony) of Atenveldt.

"Lost" Roanoke settlers could be identified by DNA

Historians are hoping that science will help discover the fate of the settlers of Virginia's lost Roanoke colony. Using DNA and genealogy sources, they they hope to trace the genetics of those who might have survived.

UK£1m El Cid sword may be a forgery

A controversy has arisen over the authenticity of La Tizona, purported to be the sword of legendary Spanish hero El Cid. The sword was purchased recently for UK£1m by authorities in the Castilla Leon region, but others in the Culture Ministry claim that the sword is a fraud.

Cynagua Summer Investiture

Their Highnesses Gunther and Juliana invite the populace to witness the Investiture of their Heirs, the Lord and Lady of the Swan Sir Dragel Alewolf and Lady Bronwen Lorelle. Saturday will be the tourneys for the Princesses Champion and the Torchlight tourney. Sunday will be the Lord Defenders tourney and the Prima Spada. Combative Arts Retreat

Note: This is not an official SCA event. It is being hosted and sponsored by Chateau de Camville at a private residence.

INVITATION: Chateau de Camville, residing in the lovely lands of the Shire of Mountain's Gate (El Dorado County California), is hosting its second Combative Arts Retreat on NOVEMBER 2-4, 2007. The focus of the weekend will be to improve the skill sets of the attendees. Each day will begin with fighting classes in the first part of the day and armored drills/focused sparring in the latter part of the day. Sunday we will conclude with a mock-tournament. Please note that this is not a "beginner class" and all attendees should have a basic grasp of the foundational skills used in armored combat. Attendees should have a complete suit of armor and their own weapons. For the newer fighter (still needs to have armor/weapons mind you-grin) a Friday Basics Review Class will be offered. Fencers brave the mud at library ren faire

Young observers called for blood recently during a rapier demonstration at the Mancos Renaissance Faire, a two-day affair sponsored by the Mancos Public Library and featuring members of the local SCA group. Katie Burford of the Durango (Colorado) Herald had the story.
