October 21st

Louvre Atlanta opens at the High Museum

An unprecedented partnership between Paris' Louvre and Atlanta's High Museum of Art is bringing a number of works of art from the famous French museum to the American South. Many of these works have never before left France. On October 14, two exhibitions open:

Boru Aelwyn and Deirdre O'Tierghnan New Heirs to Meridies

His Grace Duke Boru Aelwyn, inspired by Her Excellency Deirdre O'Tierghnan, was victorious in the October 14, 2006 Crown Tournament fought in the Kingdom of Meridies.

Sir Ralph Bigod Victorious in Artemisia Crown Tourney

Morgan, Vicar of Loch Salann, reports that Sir Ralph (pronounced "Rayf") Bigod was the winner of the recent Crown Tourney in the Kingom of Artemisia. His Highness defeated Morgan D'Antioch in the finals.

New Seven Wonders of the World List Narrowed

The vote to select the seven wonders of the world (constructed before 2000) continues. The list of prospective sites has now been narrowed to 21, and includes such historic landmarks as Stonehenge, the Great Wall of China and the Eiffel Tower. The public is invited to vote online.

Sting's Lute Performance from the "Today Show" on YouTube

A clip from musician Sting's recent performance on the Today Show has been posted on YouTube. The singer was plugging his new album of 17th century Elizabethan songs for lute by John Dowland.

Rurik & Angelik New Heirs to AEthelmearc

Marguerite reports that "His Sylvan Highness Rurik did prevail for Her Sylvan Highness Angelik" in the October 14, 2006 Crown Tourney in the Kingdom of AEthlemearc.

The "Vikings Come Home" to Michigan

Colorful costumes, bountiful food, horses, fencing, sword and shield and occasional cold drizzle were viewed and experienced during the Vikings Come Home event at the Kalkaska (Michigan) County fairgrounds. Elizabeth Kane Buzzelli of the Record-Eagle covered the event.

Lochac to Keep Non-Contact Fighter Category

Lochac will keep its non-contact fighters with some adjustments under a new agreement reached between Society Earl Marshal (SEM) Duke Hrothgar Monomakh and Lochac Kingdom Earl Marshal (KEM) Sir Gregory of Loch Swan.

Shopping Center May Hide Rare 15th Century Jewish Cemetery

Archaeologists working on the site of a shopping center in Pizen, Bohemia are seeking a rare, Jewish cemetery dating to the 15th century. Researchers know that Jewish graves tend to be well-preserved and expect them to yield valuable information on the life of the community.

Period Pewter Collection to be Auctioned

The pewter collection of the late Stanley Shemmell, including objects of Roman origin and vessels from the Spanish Armada, will go on sale at Bonham's auction house on October 26. The items in the collection represent over a thousand years in the history of pewter-making.

Lady Hrefna Ulfvarinnsdottir has announced the creation of the Inter-Kingdom Exchange, a Yahoo group to share information and resources across the Kingdoms of AEthelmearc, Atlantia and the East.

"Machiavelli" Now Off Broadway in NYC

Machiavelli, a new play by Richard Vetere, has opened off Broadway in New York City. The comedy has been called "snappy, surprising, stimulating, and all together satisfying" by critics.

English Monastery Nominated for World Heritage Status

The Venerable Bede's monastic home has been put forward as a possible UNESCO World Heritage Site. If selected, it will gain that status in 2009.

The Drachenwald Crown Tournament was fought the 14:th of October. The new Crown Prince and Crown Princesses are Sir Maximilian von Brandenberg and his lady wife Margerite von Buchholtz.

Gryphon's Lair A & S Championship & Baronial Collegium

The Beauteous Baroness Bianca doth invite the Populace of Her Fair Barony, and any others interested and willing, to attend Her Arts and Sciences Competition and Collegium.

The learning and other festivities will take place on the 21st day of October in the city of Ogden. There will be lots of classes, including a fighting class track, and an A&S competition to choose the Baronial Champion. There will also be a fabulous fundraiser lunch. Come have hot and hearty soup prepared with love by the goode cookes in our Barony and contribute to the Baronial Pavilion fund. If you would like to donate a period dish for the lunch AND enter it in the A&S, that is an option but not a requirement for the dish. Donations are greatly appreciated. Location:

Culcairn Medieval Fayre and Medieval Feast

Writer, professor and Arthurian Scholar Norma Lorre Goodrich died September 19, 2006 at her home in Claremont, California. Goodrich was known for her sometimes controversial theory that King Arthur was Scottish rather than English or Welsh.
